How do images function not only in art, but also in science, the media, and societal debates? During this edition of Food for thought, we welcome one of the most influential art historians of his generation: Professor James Elkins (School of the Art Institute of Chicago). This evening takes place in the context of KU Leuven awarding an honorary doctorate to Elkins.

The honorary doctorate for James Elkins recognizes his exceptional contribution to art history and the study of visual culture. As one of the founders of visual studies, Elkins expanded the field beyond the boundaries of traditional art history. He analyzes images across a wide range of domains, from painting and photography to scientific illustrations and contemporary media.

Elkins examines how images acquire meaning within complex social, cultural, and political contexts, and how they shape our thinking—often without our awareness. His research field therefore aligns seamlessly with M’s expertise in visual literacy.

About the speaker

James Elkins (b. 1955) is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the author of numerous publications on painting, photography, art criticism, and visual culture. Originally trained as a painter, he combines broad theoretical knowledge with insights drawn from practice.

Elkins is known for his interdisciplinary perspective. As a pioneer in global art history, he was an early advocate for the decolonization of the field and brought feminist and queer perspectives to the forefront. His work opens up new ways of thinking and inspires students, artists, and researchers worldwide.
