Artists often create their own opportunities to showcase their work, independently pursuing their projects and building their own communities. For example, Peter Morrens, currently exhibiting at M, founded the Lier-based artist collective Voorkamer in 1996 with artist Rik De Boe. In this Food for Thought event, Morrens explores the significance of such initiatives with other artists who are part of independent collectives.
What drives artists to launch their own platforms? How do they maintain their principles in an art market that is becoming more and more commercialized? And how do cities respond to these cultural sanctuaries as they come under increasing pressure? These are some of the questions that will be explored during this Food for Thought evening. By bringing together artists, the discussion will highlight the crucial role that such initiatives play in fostering a dynamic and inclusive artistic landscape.
Maya Strobbe joins the conversation for VROOM, an independent art venue in Anderlecht that focuses on experimental comics and contemporary drawing. Also taking part is Valentijn Goethals, representing 019, an artist-led initiative in Ghent that emerged from the Smoke & Dust collective. Nadia Bijl shares the vision behind Lichtekooi Artspace. And lastly, Ariadna Estalella Alba will join the conversation for NICC, an artist-run organization that represents visual artists and provides a platform for interaction with institutions and society. The discussion will be moderated by German artist Reinhard Doubrawa, who loves the so-called ‘Belgitude’ and is passionate about the spirit of collaboration and community in the Belgian art scene.

Publication launch
Alongside the panel discussion, we will also be launching the new edition of Salon Verlag, edited by Reinhard Doubrawa. Featuring contributions from Peter Morrens and others, this publication explores the distinctive spirit and bold attitude of the Belgian artistic community.
The evening provides an opportunity to contemplate the obstacles and influence wielded by artistic endeavours, as well as a glimpse into their potential role in shaping the future. An inspiring moment to reflect on the spirit of community, innovation and resilience that emanates from these initiatives.
