Since several years, the Playground festival has been the best meeting point for performing arts and visual arts. The white cube of an exhibition and the black box of theatre inspire one another more than you would think.
For this seventh edition, STUK collaborates with Museum M again, creating a ‘playground’ of both art houses. Together, we give an even better insight in the world between performing arts and visual arts. Playground looks for boundaries in all possible ways, unravels codes and stimulates encounters between different worlds of art. And all for the public to discover.
Clédat & Petitpierre
La Parade Moderne
After their impressive participation last year, the French artistic duo Clédat & Petitpierre bring new work to Playground this year. La Parade Moderne consists of ten colourful, larger-than-life dolls. Each character is based on familiar figures from iconic paintings by artists from the first half of the 20th-century such as Edvard Munch, René Magritte, Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico, Fernand Léger or Kasimir Malevich.
The Book Project is a continuous project by visual artists Erki De Vries & Pieter Huybrechts in which they explore our experiences of space. Using photos, video and sculptural elements, they create a construction for each individual space that feels both familiar and alienating at the same time.
Clean Air is an estranging live performance that investigates how meaning is given to landscapes. For instance, the Alps are linked with power, purity and cleanness, terms that were also used to describe the German identity in the 1920’s.
An empty exhibition room has been reserved exclusively for the new film by visual artist Marijke Van Warmerdam. Three characters, actress Carly Wijs, actor Jerry Killick (Forced Entertainment, i.a.) and performer Rasmus Ölme (Ultima Vez, i.a.), perform a text based on Exiles, the only play by James Joyce.
Gerard Herman (Gent, °1989) presents Winterreise at Playground. For three days, he will drive an ice cream truck along a fixed route around the city. The truck will not play a typical ice cream truck melody, however. Herman asked Floris Vanhoof, Remörk and MIAUX to write new music for the truck. When the soundtrack is interrupted and the truck stops, passers-by can buy ice creams.
Reflections without Sun brings together film and video by artists and filmmakers who escape formal filmic narratives through the use of direct, sometimes exaggerated performances for the camera. Mixing over-arranged mise-en-scène and dressing up with more intimate scenes of self-reflection, their aesthetics range from 1950s kitsch to Punk, New Wave and ‘digital flatness’.
