The paintings and works on paper of Tina Gillen (°1972, Luxemburg, lives and works in Brussels) are largely figurative. Reality is depicted so schematically that it becomes almost unreal. The compositions oscillate between two and three dimensions; between being recognisable and being abstract. The artist achieves this effect by isolating elements of photographs. The result is detached, and yet it leaves space for association. The canvasses are never perfect, but almost always contain ‘disturbing’ elements.
Each work holds a tension between detailed, smoothly painted features and irregular aspects that leave space for coincidence. The leitmotiv of Gillen’s oeuvre is the relationship between the human person and his/her environment and the way in which reflection about reality is contrasted with a certain detachment. At M Leuven, Tina Gillen exhibited both recent paintings and works on paper and a new, large mural, which was integrated into the exhibition space of the museum.

Tina Gillen studied at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna and the HISK in Antwerp. In 2007, she was a resident artist at ISCP in New York. Her work has featured in numerous Belgian and international exhibitions, of which the most recent are MUDAM Luxemburg, Platform Garanti in Istanbul and Wiels in Brussels. Her work is also part of various collections. She has exhibited at the Nosbaum & Reding - Art Contemporain Gallery in Luxemburg and at the Crown Gallery in Brussels several times.
