The Tervuren School

In 1870, Tervuren became an artistic hotspot in the region. The Hertenberg, the ducal castle, the hollow ways and the majestic avenues were the ideal backdrop for a new painters’ movement: the Tervuren School. They changed Belgian landscape painting forever.

Into nature

The Sonian Forest, the glorious nature and the picturesque vistas drew landscape painters out of their studios. With their palettes and easels, they headed into the open air, and decisively opted for realism.

You can still visit the landmarks where the painters once set up their easels.
