The subject of this exhibition is artist, critic and gallerist Fernand Spillemaeckers (Mechelen, 1938 - Ostend, 1978). Coupled with research carried out by guest curators Koen Brams and Dirk Pültau, M looks at the early history of MTL, the Brussels gallery Spillemaeckers founded in 1970, which played a pioneering role in introducing conceptual art to Belgium.
At the invitation of the art society Celbeton, in 1970 he organized an exhibition in Dendermonde entitled Concepts in which he juxtaposed work by Daniel Buren, Yves De Smet, Lili Dujourie and Guy Mees with a five-hour audiotape entitled Reference for a Marxist formalism. The exhibition at M is subtitled: Part 1: Towards a ‘Marxist’ formalism (1961-1970). Art works, documentation, letters and photographs shed light on Spillemaeckers’ own art, his art criticism and the Concepts exhibition.
