To Create Closeness
In 2023, artist Grace Schwindt was a resident in the depot of M. She became fascinated by the damaged historical sculptures in the collection and the care devoted to them by the depot staff. By working closely with restorers and conservators, Schwindt gained a unique insight into how museums handle heritage, damage, and restoration. She translated this experience into a series of new watercolors, paintings, and sculptures, which are shown for the first time in her solo exhibition ‘A History of Touch’ (14.02–16.11.2025). At the heart of the exhibition is a ceramic sculpture she specifically created as a support for a 16th-century Christ figure from M’s collection.

The documentary ‘To Create Closeness’ follows Schwindt throughout this journey: from her first observations in the museum depot and her conversations with experts to the making of her artworks and the final exhibition. The film offers an in-depth look at contemporary themes such as the representation of the body, trauma, and healing. How do damages influence our perception of an artwork? And what parallels can be drawn with how our society deals with physical vulnerability?
With this documentary, M not only provides insight into Grace Schwindt’s research and artistic practice but also highlights its role as a place where artists are supported in creating and producing new work. ‘To Create Closeness’ is an invitation to view art and heritage from a new perspective—and to reflect on the meaning of care, damage, and restoration, both in museums and in everyday life.
